Interview with Robbie Myers of Elle

Robbie Myers says Elle magazine has 5 million readers. Factor in that they always hype the numbers up, so in reality it's got to be something like 3-4 million. Then extrapolate that to include other glossies - Vogue, Bazaar, InStyle and what do you get? 20-25 million people reading fashion magazines? Maybe a bit more if you count Lucky, Glamour and Jane. Still that's about 1 out of every 10 people in the US. And how many of them buy magazines because Jessica Simpson's on the cover?!? I don't even want to know...

Random MJ sighting

I saw Marc Jacobs! Yesterday he was crossing Broadway at Houston street around 2PM. He gave a once over to my Kashiyama trench, briefly checked out the protesters and headed towards the Mercer street store. His hair was sleeked back and his military-style jacket was wrapped around his waist creating that bulky layered look. I kicked myself for not taking the camera and headed down to Canal street for some fake bag shopping. (Ugh. I feel dirty, so, don't ask.)

Beauty vs Substance

The success of the ubiquitous "Better than Botox?" StriVectin-SD ad campaign must have triggered some serious brain activity on the part of the cosmetics companies. W mag is sending out a survey to subscribers trying to test the effectiveness of an info-packed ad:
Prevage by Elizabeth Arden ad. Or is this a science thesis?

as opposed to something like this:
Clinique ad. Great still life photography. But is it effective?

And now that Bath & Body works are rolling out one of those infomercials, the cosmetics giants want to know what's going to vamp up the sales: pretty imagery or a crash-course in dermatology packed into an ad?

Surprise Surprise

It's Thursday and Kate Moss has apparently bagged another Fall 2006 campaign. Perez reports that Mario Testino and Donatella Versace have been busy shooting her all day at Jack Studio in New York. I imagine Lindsey Lohan will be totally pissed when she finds out.

No Way

Just when you thought Lindsey Lohan was poisoning your environment WWD brought the really bad news: "Poll Finds Aguilera Main Fashion Influence.
Mirroring the unpredictability of fashion itself, a survey has found that the celebrity most likely to influence Americans' purchases of apparel is Christina Aguilera -- despite her hiatus from the fashion ad scene."

Wait. You mean THIS Aguilera?! I can't even imagine the population sample that would call her a fashion influence ... It's like voting for Bush. There's no way we could let this go down. We shall fight. I'm off to the fashion ad trenches. Cross your manicured fingers and wish me luck.

The Devil Wears Prada - First Look

If you're like me you'll want to see that delusional assistant tortured and humiliated to shreds. I hope Miranda Priestly is mean enough...

Jessica Stam In Numero

Jessica Stam always appears to be "on something" but it doesn't stop her from getting hotter by the day ... after all what we really like about our models is vice or at least the looks of it. >>>

Prada Skirt Party

Just got back from Prada Skirt Party. We all missed having the Prada store in the neighborhood. The downtown mall that is Soho is just not the same without it. I got there at about the right time - when Patrick Demarchelier was just leaving and Linda Evangelista was just arriving. Here, I took a picture of Miuccia herself...

Then I bumped into a few of my friends...
Guess which legs belong to Ms. Ashley Tyler?

We had a few drinks and hors d'oeuvres...And nobody - not even the Peta activists outside (can you believe it - they brought in a gross dead animal) could stop us from enjoying ourselves... The party, of course, was all about the skirts:

Spring Bunnies

A freckled Lily Cole graces the cover of May's i-D. Susie Bubble doodles on her face. Cathy Horyn admits to wearing slutty shoes . Fashion Addict is happy because the i-D cover almost matches her new blog template.

Another Reason To Love The Olsen Twins

If we didn't watch the kids' choice awards it's because we didn't realize they were so X-rated...

A Summer in Chanel

As much as we love to hate Karl Lagerfeld, the ads photographed by him are actually perfect for his lunch-frau demographic:

Calvin Recycles!

It just came through the wires that Calvin Klein signed Kate Moss to hawk their misguided fall collection. Kate Moss can sell sheer black chiffon skirts to eskimos, you know...

WWD Update: In a move that brings Kate Moss' career full circle, Calvin Klein Inc. and Calvin Klein Jeans are expected to announce today that Moss is the star of the fall 2006 Calvin Klein Jeans advertising campaign.

Compare & Contrast

While American Vogue sometimes induces a mock-puke reaction, Korean Vogue continues to pleasantly surprise. Perhaps, artistic value has something to do with it?? Hmm ...

Arm warmers and baggy boots. Yes, baggy boots.
Don't you just looooove the Italian Vogue?

F.A.D. in Moscow's Afisha

All the laughter of the tears! Afisha magazine names F.A.D. one of the 40 need-to-know sites about fashion! And they didn't call me a "shallow bitch" which is nice.

F.A.D. Must-Die List

Skinny jeans >> Because enough is enough: they are sold at Zara and H&M and we wore them all winter. Let's move on.

Leggings/Mini Skirt/Flats ensemble >> Because we were sick of them in Spring 2005 but the uber-trendy mall girls decided to carry this Mary Kate Olsen relic into Spring '06. Do they not know they look like the last year's issue of US magazine?!

People that wear sweat suits >> Because if you're still into sweat suit chic you might as well be dead.

People that wear Uggs >> Same reason.

Things with skulls on them >> Because only beatnik stripes could be more of a cliche.

Word "fashionista" >> Because it's impossible that someone can pronounce it with a straight face.

People that call skinny people anorexic >> They are not anorexic, they just have the self-control to say no to a deep-fried burrito and it makes you jealous. >>>

Mea Culpa

I have a confession to make. I got a job. This job brings me so close to the upper echelons of the fashion media industry that having this blog puts me in a weird spot. I overhear and oversee so much sensitive information that it makes me dizzy. Unretouched editorial photos, unfiltered gossip... Argh. The things that go through my hands and that could end up on this blog (if I weren't such a good girl) could potentially do damage to some very important people whom I actually happen to admire and respect. I would hate that.
As that botched up hag Janice Dickinson would say "We don't rat out our bitches!"

I could try and be the next Imaginary Socialite ... but those downtown blues clues would pale in comparison ... And while I figure out how to walk this very fine line, I'll give you a little tease ... So, boys and girls, who do you think is going to wink on the next cover of i-D?
